The next time you walk or drive through town, think about this- every bridge, building, road, street corner or park you see began on a drafting table. Drafters are translators-transforming the ideas and rough sketches of architects and engineers into detailed, workable plans. Put simply, the profession of drafting is indispensable to modern life.

A career in drafting is an exciting proposition. You’ll need a broad base of skills and knowledge: algebra, trigonometry, English, computers, social sciences, precision drawing and humanities. The instructors at South Puget Sound Community College are eager to help you learn these skills.

Opportunities
Drafters translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers and architects into detailed drawings. Experienced workers may advance to plan checkers, detailers, or design drafters. A typical work week is 40 hours, but overtime may be required to meet deadlines. Drafters work for engineering and architectural consulting firms, manufacturing firms, designers, and a variety of government agencies.

What You'll Do Here
In the past 10 years, South Puget Sound has earned a reputation in the Pacific Northwest for staying ahead of the curve in drafting technology.

You’ll learn the latest in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) as well as the core skills of "broad work" precision drawing and quality lettering techniques in architectural, civil and mechanical drafting.

Whether you choose to earn a one-year Certificate of Completion in Drafting or pursue a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree, you’ll learn how to effectively evaluate and improve your work. You'll also have the chance to put your classroom learning to the test in the "real world." Our Cooperative Work Experience program can place you in a part-time job where you can earn credit and gain invaluable drafting experience.
